The Full Form of PKD
PKD Full Form – The full form of PKD in medical terms is Polycystic Kidney Disease. It is a disorder that is inherited by the child. Clusters of cysts grow on the kidneys, causing them to enlarge and lead to loss of functionality. Cysts are non-cancerous round sacs filled withfluid. The cysts differ in size, and can grow large. Developing many or large cysts can damage the kidneys.
The PKD has symptoms that include:
- Headache
- Kidney failure
- Back or side pain
- Blood in urine
- Fullness feeling in abdomen
- Kidney stones
- High blood pressure
- Urinary tract or kidney infections
- Increased abdomen size (enlarged kidneys)
Abnormality in genes leads topolycystic kidney disease. That means most the disease runs in the family in most cases. Rarely, genetic mutation occurs on its own, so that neither parent has the mutated gene to pass down to the child.
There are two types of genetic flaws that cause PKD, such as:
- Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease – Signs of ADPKD often appear during the ages 30 and 40. Any one parent having this gene has the capability to pass it to the next generation. This accounts for approximately 90 percent cases.
- Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease -Signs of ARPKD develop shortly after birth. Also, symptoms may not appear till later period in childhood or by adolescence. Both parents required to have the gene to pass on this disease.
