The Full form of MRI

The full form of MRI is Magnetic Resonance Imaging. MRI is a method used to provide detailed images of organs and tissues of the body, through a computer, with the help of magnetic field and radio waves. It is a very common technique used in medical imaging.

MRI machines are like large magnetic tubes. When the person lies down inside it, the magnetic field induces the water molecules in the body to realign itself and produce signals due to the impact of the radio waves. This helps in capturing the images of the body and creates 3D images for better diagnosis of problems.

MRI of brain tissues and spinal cord help to notice conditions like dilation of cerebral blood vessels, dysfunction in inner ears or eyes, multiple sclerosis, stroke, tumors and issues in the spinal cord. Likewise, MRI of the heart shows if there is the presence of problems like the structural problems of the heart, blockage in blood vessels, heart disorders caused by a heart attack. MRI also checks for tumors or abnormalities in other organs of the body like kidneys, spleen, uterus, ovaries, pancreas, prostate, liver, etc. Joint abnormalities, cartilage or ligament damages, bone infections, bone or soft tissue tumors are usually easily diagnosed with the help of MRI.

It is advised to remove any ornaments, hearing aids, dentures or cosmetics as they can affect the imaging. Radiologists are doctors who are specifically trained for interpreting data, analyzing these images and reporting the results of the scan to the doctor. MRIs are also often prescribed by the doctor to keep a track record of the efficiency of the treatment being provided.
