The Full form of IIST

The full form of IIST is the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology abbreviated as IIST was founded in the year 2007 in Valiamala, Kerala. It is a government based deemed university which was inaugurated by then chairman of ISRO – Mr. G. Madhavan Nair for the study of space science and technology research. The IIST was formed by ISRO and the space department under the Government of India, then Prime Minister – Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Azad was the chancellor of this institute. 

The IIST offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs to students who want to pursue a career in the field of space science and technology research. The IIST offers a BTech degree to students pursuing the Space Technology course, in which there are three sub courses: BTech in Avionics, BTech in Aerospace, and BTech in Physical Science. In the present time, the IIST offers a five-year dual degree BTech + MTech or BTech + MS program in the Engineering Physics branch. It invested Rs 270 crore initially, and the department of research funds Rs 40 crore annually to the IIST.

The IIST has a hundred-acre campus which is located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and it is affiliated to the department of space under the government of India. The campus is situated at the foothills of Sahyadri and has several environmentally friendly residential buildings of unique architecture. The extension of the campus is still Ponmudi Hills, where an observatory is being constructed. The residential area is built nearby the liquid propulsion system center.
