The Full form of IGCAR

The full form of IGCAR is the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, which is one of the premier nuclear research centers in India. The IGCAR was established in 1971 and it is located in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu near Chennai. Then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi renamed the Reactor Research Centre as IGCAR in 1985. The IGCAR gets a budget of US$ 120 million every year for conducting research in the field of material physics, nano-sciences, reactor engineering, metallurgy, electronics and instrumentation, and atomic energy.   

The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research has a Fast Breeder Test Reactor, which conducts the high power engineering and physics experiments. The IGCAR also features a BARC training school for graduates from the field of science and engineering to pursue multiple courses within a year. The IGCAR has a staffing line up of 2515 individuals, which includes engineers and scientists. The IGCAR has formed collaborations with IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur for conducting research in the field of thermal striping, simulation of thermal shock, and designing of the fast breeder reactors. 

The IGCAR features two commercial reactors operating at 220 MWe, and they are managed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India. The IGCAR also has three research reactors: the FBTR reactor managed by the ROMG; the Kamini reactor which uses Uranium 233 as fuel; the Prototype sodium-cooled design based fast reactor. The IGCAR has a reprocessing plant that features advanced technology to reprocess irradiated mixed carbide fuels about 100 tonnes every year.
