IACS Full Form – The full form of IACS is the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science. It is an educational institute offering courses in higher learning and is based in Kolkata. The institute was founded by Mahendra Lal Sarkar in 1876 to focus on researching the basic sciences. IACS is regarded as the oldest research institute in India and has an area of 9.5 acres in the city of Jadavpur in South Kolkata. The institute was granted status as a Deemed University in 2018 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development under the category of De-novo, section 3 of UGC (University Grants Commission) Act (1956).

The institute’s primary focus is on researching the fields of physics, chemical biology, and chemistry. Being one of the most proactive research centers in the nation, the institute publishes an average of 500 research articles each year in various fields such as fuel cells, energy sciences, carbon nanotubes, and graphene. The main focus of the institute is on its Ph.D. programs which are meant to be provided by the Jadavpur University or the University of Calcutta. While there are also integrated Ph.D. programs for post-bachelor’s students, these are a lot more extreme in their handling of the curriculum.

A famous alumnus of the institute is the Nobel Laureate Sir Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman, who conducted his research on the Raman effect in this institute. His original work was published in the Indian Journal of Physics, which is now managed and published by IACS.
