The Full form of HRI

The full form of HRI is Harish-Chandra Research Institute. It is an educational institute dedicated to research in fields such as theoretical physics and mathematics. The institute is based in the city of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh and was established back in 1965. The institute offers several doctoral programs including one in affiliation with the HBNI or Homi Bhabha National Institute.

HRI has a large, well-facilitated, and residential campus near Allahabad in Jhusi Town. It has more than 30 teachers and 50 Ph.D. students. They are accompanied by 25 post-doctoral scientists and researchers on a visiting basis. The institution is funded and managed by the Department of Atomic Energy or (DAE), in the Government of India.

It was initially founded under the name – Mehta Research Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Physics in honor of the B.S. Mehta Trust in Calcutta. It was then managed by Prof. Nath Prasad who was succeeded by Prof. S.R. Sinha who were both graduates of Allahabad University. The first Director officially appointed was Prof. Prabhu Lal Bhatnagar in 1975, who was also succeeded by Prof. S.R. Sinha.

In recent years, the Mathematics Research Group of the HRI has been keeping its focus on Analysis, Algebra, Number Theory, Geometry, and Topology; whereas the Physics Group has kept the focus on Condensed Matter Physics, Astrophysics, String Theory, High Energy Physics, and Quantum Information and Computation.

Besides this, the institute also is known to conduct its annual SPIM or Summer Program in Mathematics which invites undergraduates from across the nation to join an extremely immersive mathematics program for a month.
