The Full form of GMO
GMO Full Form – The full form of GMO is Genetically Modified Organisms, it could be an animal, a plant or a micro-organism that has been developed in a lab with modified genetic material by the use of genetic engineering techniques or transgenic technology. Combination of different organisms, like animals, plants, viruses, and bacteria, that doesn’t occur in nature are cultivated and grown and are often termed as “transgenic” organisms.
The genetic codes are altered meticulously at molecular levels, with recombinant DNA techniques, usually by incorporating the genes from unrelated species of organisms to express the desired physiological traits or obtain desired biological products that are difficult to acquire by conventional selective breeding.
GMOs became essential for biomedical research since the 1980s. Due to the possibility of genetically modifying animal models of human genetic diseases; it paved the way for novel therapies and research on risk factors surmounting on candidates. Genetically modified plants, animals and microbes transformed the manufacturing of intricate pharmaceuticals, with safer and inexpensive vaccines and therapeutics.
Genetic modifications of insects are marked as important for proving helpful in preventing parasitic diseases. Genetically modified plants are being developed, having antigenic proteins in edible parts, which when consumed, boost the immune system by producing antibodies against the selected pathogens. As a form of gene therapy, genetic modifications of humans are developing as a treatment choice for diseases that range from metabolic disorders to cancers.
Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen created the first GMO in 1973, a bacterium resistant to kanamycin. Scientists at J. Craig Venter Institute, in 2010, declared to have made the first synthetic-bacterial gnome, named Synthia.
