The Full form of ECT

ECT Full Form – The full form of ECT is Electro-Convulsive Therapy which is a course of action, performed under the usual anesthesia, in which low powered controlled electric currents are passed to the brain with the intention to create a mild seizure. ECT is found to stir changes in brain chemistry which ultimately reverse severe psychotic or depressive symptoms of mental health conditions. This procedure should only be used if required much necessarily since it affects the candidate’s memory to some extent.

It was earlier known as Electroshock Therapy. The stigma revolved around uncontrolled high powered electric currents with non-administered anesthesia which led to permanent brain damages, the fracturing of bones and other side effects. However, present-day ECT treatments are safe and heavily administered to reduce the possible side effects and gain more benefit as a working treatment in itself.

Life-threatening depressive phases or violent psychotic activity are often the main symptoms which initiate the ECT treatment. Other times when ECT is used are treatment-resistance depression (the symptoms are resistant to medication), severe mania (complete euphoric or risky psychosis due to bipolar disorder), aggressiveness or agitation of people suffering from dementia, during pregnancy state when medication may harm the fetus, old people who cannot handle side effects, and catatonia in link with schizophrenia.

A psychiatrist takes the decision dwelling upon the consequences of possible risk factors in leaving the conditions untreated. The individuals are free to take opinions from another psychiatrist if they feel hesitant about the treatment. Consent of the individual or the guardians (in the case of unresponsiveness) is very important.
