The title is awarded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and doctors who have already completed their MD in their field of choice are also eligible to give the final DNB certification examination along with the DNB trainees.

The National Board of Examinations (NBE) was established by the Government of India in the year 1975 under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It had the primary intention to conduct post graduate and post-doctoral medical examinations for various disciplines under the medical field on an All-India basis. Now, the board is also known to conduct the NEET examination which is an All-India Medical entrance examination conducted for students looking to take admission in undergraduate medical degrees such as MBBS.
