While the institute comes under the jurisdiction of the Department of Science and Technology, it functions as an autonomous research center. It is situated at a height of 1,951 meters from sea level, and at a distance of approximately 9 kilometers from Nainital. During the nights, the institute requires prior booking for observing the cosmos, which also comes under four specific days when it is allowed.

This institute was established on the 20th of April, 1954 while under Dr. A. N. Singh. Its initial name was the USPO or Uttar Pradesh State Observatory within the campus of the Government Sanskrit College. When Uttrakhand was made an official state in the year 2000, USPO was renamed as the State Observatory or SO. Later on, when it came under the jurisdiction of the Department of Science and Technology, it was renamed as Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Studies or ARIES for short.

ARIES covers a ton of space-related research which mostly includes observations of distant galaxies, our Sun, and other nearby stars. They have made several significant contributions towards the detection of Gamma-Ray Busts which are the most high-energy events in the known cosmos. Moreover, due to their geological benefits, several observations which aren’t possible in Australia and the Canary Islands can be made here.
