Ans: 1. India lies in the Northern hemisphere, with the mainland extending between latitude 8 degree 4’ N and 37 degree 6’ N and longitudes 68 degree 7’ E and 87 degree 25’ E. The Tropic of Cancer (23 degrees 30’N) divides the country into almost two equal parts where the Lakshadweep Islands lie in the Arabian Sea to the south east of the mainland.
2. The countries which are larger than India are Russia, Canada, USA, China, Brazil and Australia. Russia is the largest of all the countries with an area of 17.09 square kilometres whereas India has 3.28 square kilometres.
3. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie to the south east of India in the Bay of Bengal. India has a land boundary of around 15200 km. The total length of the coastline which also includes the islands of Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands is 7516.6 kilometres.

Q3. The sun rises two hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh as compared to Gujarat in the west but the watches show the same time. How does this happen?
Ans: The longitudinal and the latitudinal extent of India is about 30 degree. The east-west extent is smaller than the north-south extent. There is a time lag of 2 hours from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh. Arunachal Pradesh lies to the Eastern side of India and the sun rises earlier when we compare it to Gujarat. The time of the Standard Meridian of India is taken as the standard time for the whole country. The Standard Meridian of India passes through Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. The latitudinal extent influences the duration of day and night as one moves from South to North. Since we follow the standard time for the whole country therefor the watch shows the same time in Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh.
Q4. The Central location of India at the head of the Indian Ocean is considered of great significance. Why?
Ans : India is a Southward extension of the Asian continent. It is located in a central position between the east and the West Asia. Since the Indian Ocean connects the East Asian countries with Europe in the west, the Indian Ocean provides India with a strategic location. The Deccan Peninsula also protrudes into the Indian Ocean and helped India in establishing close contact with West Asia, Africa and your from the Western coast and with southeast and East Asia from the eastern coast. No other country in the world has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean and therefore the ocean is named after this country.
