The institute is a non-independent body and works under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, India. Its primary focuses are in the fields of glass, ceramic, mica, and other materials and their developments.
This institute is the first of four planned institutions in the fields of research laboratories in India by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. The institute was established in 1944, however, its official inauguration was on the 26th of August, 1950. During the initial stages of its establishment, it performed most of its work towards the identification of the mineral type resources in the country, and their estimated quantities and usages. Over time, their work moved more towards performing quality control tests in glass and ceramic productions and this began getting attention.
Their progress in developing various new types of glass led to CGCRI gaining fame on the industrial as well as international stages. This helped push them to new levels which can even help others develop a better quality of optical glass which revolutionized several parts of the industry including the lens industry.
By 1961, CGCRI was recognized as a major institute where research could be conducted to make better standards of glass, minerals, etc. It even helped them to gain more funding to pursue further research into ceramic materials and their quality control. Till date, CGCRI has had a major impact on the ceramic and glass industry.
